Azaz Community Housing

Azaz Community Housing is a 70,000 m² residential development in Aleppo, Syria, designed to rebuild community life and promote social cohesion through human-centered urban design. The project’s master plan emphasizes the creation of public spaces of varying sizes — inspired by Aleppo’s traditional urban fabric — seamlessly integrated within the surrounding environment. This approach strengthens the sense of identity, safety, and belonging while addressing social and environmental factors that influence residents’ behavior and well-being. Floatmap’s architectural concept connects the residential units using a 3x3 modular grid system, allowing flexibility and adaptability across different family needs and cultural backgrounds. Each unit reflects the local architectural identity while promoting interaction, inclusivity, and sustainable living. Through a combination of cultural sensitivity, sustainable materials, and modern design technologies, Azaz Community Housing stands as a model of urban regeneration — merging local heritage with forward-thinking design to restore the social fabric of Aleppo’s communities.

The project's master plan primarily focuses on the inclusion of

public spaces of varying sizes, inspired by the urban fabric of

Aleppo, and their integration with the surrounding context.

This approach gives the area a unique identity and enhances

the sense of security and community belonging, particularly

addressing the social and environmental aspects that

influence residents' behavior and well-being, while

seamlessly reintegrating them into the social fabric.

The design aims to reflect the local culture while

accommodating the diverse backgrounds of the residents by

connecting the project units with a 3x3 modular grid. These

units are constructed on isolated foundations to mitigate

earthquake risks.
